PictureFarmSprouts - school year programs

During the school year, we provide experientially based environmental education opportunities to community school children.  These community outreach programs are meant to demonstrate our commitment to extending the education experience of UBC to the greater community.

The UBC Farm is a fun and safe place for children to explore where their food comes from. Through science-based and hands-on activities, children will see that the farm is "more than just the food you eat"

SpringFarmers

Children's Learning Garden Programs
The Children's Learning Garden at the UBC Farm is host to the Intergenerational Landed Learning Project, FarmWonders Summer Camps, and Farm Discovery Tours. The garden provides science-based, hands-on education for children, exploring the connections among land, food, and community. Children cultivate their own gardens on the site, harvest, prepare, and eat fresh food from the garden, and participate in activities that encourage environmental stewardship.

SpringFarmers
SpringFarmers offers a hands-on, farm-based after-school education program for 8 to 13 year olds. As a new joint initiative of FarmWonders summer camps and the Intergenerational Landed Learning Project, SpringFarmers is designed to give children a science-based approach to land, food and community. Children work in small, collaborative groups with community volunteers to sow, grow, harvest, and eat crops they grow in the Children’s Learning Garden at the UBC Farm. Opportunities to explore other parts of the farm are included. Participants engage in the environment through all of nature's cycles, learning what nature has to teach through the seasons. Each visit of the program corresponds with a theme. Pre- and post-visit materials will be included for most visits to support families in exploring these visit themes in more depth at home or in the community. An overview of the themes is included below.
